could it be a regional thing? I was told by my Dad's branch that foreign currency could only be bought over the phone (or on-line) using a Wells Fargo visa. Which was a disappointment since I had used them before (but years ago)

Hello,
I usually get my euros at the airport once I land in europe. The fee is usually very good. Check with your bank before you leave and let them know you will be travelling. They can also raise your daily limit for the duration of the trip. This can come in handy. I usually take out the max I can for the day, to limit the number of transaction fee I have to pay. I stopped buying euros here in the states before I leave because I got a really bad rate but once I was in europe, the same bank gave me a better rate. It was strange.

According to Wells Fargo foreign exchange 800 number, main branches of Wells Fargo all over the country are still selling foreign currency over the counter. Check their website. My local branch can get anything for me for just a mailing fee. I guess it is possible that getting foreign currency sent to local branches is a regional thing. More likely, the people at your branch didn't know or just didn't want to bother. I find that people at branches of banks are often in the dark about things like this. I had to force someone at Chase to research ATM rates before he finally admitted that they charge 2% for foreign exchange on ATM withdrawals on top of the 1% network charge and their fee.
