Buses from Bruges to Dunkerque

Question for Belgian bus experts...my husband wants to go see a bike race in Dunkerque, France. He would leave from Bruges to get to Dunkerque. On the map, the two cities look close. But, we can't figure out how to get there easily via public transportation. Are there local buses in Bruges where my husband can buy a round-trip ticket the day of the bike race? We will not have a car. Thanks!

I don't know of any buses, but you can get there by train...catch a train from Bruges to Lille (the station is Lille Flandres) and from there a train to Dunkerque. The trip takes about 3 hours, the actually time in the train is about 2.5 hours but there seems to be a half hour gap between the trains.

It's faster by car, to be sure. If the bike race starts in the morning, he'll have to catch a very early train.
