Budget friendly hotels Amsterdam?
We are planning a trip to Amsterdam, Delft, Bruges and then Paris in September. We were just able to confirm our dates with the couple we are travelling with. We had hoped to stay at Hotel Clemons in Amsterdam but the prices there have gone up and are now over $500 Canadian a night. We are hoping to be in the central area and don’t need anything special. Don’t plan to spend much time in the room. We would appreciate any recommendations you might have. Thank you in advance for your time.

Please be aware that Amsterdam has way higher hotel prices than cities nearby. With excellent trains and short distances between cities, you can view the entire west of the country (Randstad) as one agglomeration. You might want to look at alternatives in Haarlem, The Hague, Utrecht or Leiden. As you're also visiting Delft, Leiden or The Hague seem obvious choices
You might also consider basing yourself in Rotterdam. Schiphol - Rotterdam is 20 minutes by ICD train. And Delft is 15 minutes from Rotterdam by train. You'll have the same train connections to Belgium you would have from Amsterdam.

Have you looked at websites like Booking? Reviews to read facility and location filters.
Maybe somewhere out of AMS would be cheaper. It does not have to be a large city like Rotterdam or Utrecht either. A railway station would be a must Somewhere like Weesp. Maybe look at Amsterdam Noord. You can take a free ferry across to Amsterdam City.

There are a couple historically reasonable places in a great location by the Museumsplein tram/bus stop. One nice thing is you can get the #397 bus straight to Schiphol from that stop. Goes every 6 minutes or so. I've stayed at the XO Inner and Conscious Museum Square for under 100 (single) but prices are crazy nowadays - - you might get a double for 150/night or over 300/night depending on the dates those places. Another traditional discount hub is within walking distance of Sloterdijk station - - zero atmosphere, but good variety of places to stay, in a handy transport location. I'd also be very tempted by Menachem's suggesting to stay at the Ibis right next to the Leiden rail station for about 160/night.

Thank you dfourh! We usually book through booking.com but like the option/filter of free cancellation so that eliminates some of the more affordable options. We have landed on the Clemens for now and as the time comes closer will see what less expensive hotels in the Museumsplein area are available for our 4 nights. Our plan is to travel by train to our other locations - Delft, Bruges, Paris then London. Lots of research still to be done! We really appreciate this forum and have learned a lot from so many generous folks. Thank you!

Public transport is excellent so I'd recommend expanding what you mean by central by 2 to 3 km but along tram/train lines. We stayed last in a university accom out of season a few years back but we've also stayed in Haarlem and caught the train in. I think you will also find cheaper digs north of the river north of the Central station and come in by ferry.

We stayed in the Vondelpark area and loved it. Very quiet neighborhood, and nearby restaurants, but walking distance to everything and to a great tram line. We always look at Booking.com for maps, prices and reviews, and then book directly with the hotel. Always get fully refundable rates.
You don't mention your budget but if this is still too high, we thought Haarlem was charming. It is 10 minutes away and would be more reasonable.
