It is early days yet, but I have a chance to travel with a friend to Budapest in October, 2010.
Never having traveled to that part of Europe before I need a little help with flights.
Early research has given me a Delta flight PIT-JFK-BUD, only one stop. The price is $950. I must say that this itinerary is painless in my opinion. And one must always pay for the convenience. No dicey low cost carrier connections with all that that entails.
All of the other things that can crop up with mutiple connections.
From those of you that have traveled to Middle Europe, can you give me some suggestions and an idea of what you have spent.
Anyway. I know that more experienced travelers here can give me some ideas.

When planning our last trip we found that round trip airfare to Budapest was cheaper than most of the other cities. I haven't checked in the past year but I would think you can do better on airfare price. I checked some flights and they are in the $900 range for your time frame. US Airways has flights between now and April in the $500 range. I would wait and keep checking the airlines for a special.

I used Skymiles for JFK-BUD. At that time (May 2007) it would have cost about $650 to buy the ticket.

I do have enough miles to use US Airways and Continental but I thought if I found a decent price, I would just buy the ticket.
I have told my travel companion that we have plenty of time.
We are not locked into any dates but I have been thinking of early October to give us the best chance for good weather.
I have also signed up for a couple of flight planners, Orbitz and Travelocity. I set the price at $750

Not sure of your dates but I just put in 10/7/2010-10/18/2010 and came back with a price of $804.25 per person PIT-JFK-BUD

We were in Budapest the first few days of October last year and it was a very good time. The temperatures were just right for eating Hungarian goulash. Making myself hungry thinking about it.

We enjoyed going to the Spoon Restaurant on the river. Don't miss the restrooms. They are very up-to-date!! It is more expensive than other places we ate.

Budapest had the second metro system in the world - London first. You can find that metro on Andrassy Street still in operation.

Hope you like Budapest as much as we did.
