Uncle Sam:
Wow, you're making me thirsty!
Didn't know Shiner, so just visited the Spoetzl brewery website. Way to go!
As a beer lover and Stella lover, have a look at Stella's corporate website (www.interbrew.com). After absorbing Labatt and Bass, they also took over Beck's two months ago. They're now # 2 worldwide after your friends Bud. A different approach though: they buy local brands (like Rolling Rock, XX, Borsodi or Tennent's Lager) and then cross-market, e.g. by distributing Mexican Sol in Europe and Stella in the US, through Labatt.
Cheers to Michael, the original poster. His question generated some interesting facts.

>It is my understanding that Bud will >not allow Budvar to be marketed under >Bud or Budvar anywhere outside of CR >because they trademarked everywhere >while CR was behind iron curtain.

Not so, "real" Budweiser is sold under that name in the UK. You have to be very careful not to confuse it with the American gnat's pee that also goes under that name.
American beer? In Europe? NO IT CANNOT BE!!

You beer snobs that say budweiser is only drunk by trailer trash who like WFF are the same sort of people who love to wax lyrical about belgian chocolate (ghirardellis...euch I wouldnt touch it the stuff) or french bread being the *only* bread of choice for the educated gastronaut.

Get over youselves. if someone likes bud, so what? The old crap that europe is more sophisticated died out with the ark, just a pity you lot didn't.

one time I went out with a bunch of my Brit friends in London, it was my shout so I asked everyone what they wanted (about five-six guys mind you - and one from New Zealand)..

they all opted for either Bud, or Miller. This was in some trendy bar in Leicester Square...

I remember teasing them about all the fine beers their country had, and they wanted our crap. In a BOTTLE no less... but to each his own.

Beth

ps. Uncle Sam, you can get Sam Adams over there.. I think so, anyway. fairly certain I've seen it. I personally prefer Chimay Rouge above all - just harder to find...
