Brugge or Antwerp?

If given the choice to spend one night in either Brugge or Antwerp which would you choose? Why? Can you recommend lodging in either as well? Thanks

Brugge, hands down. Antwerp is quite nice, but the canals, the cafes, the antiquity at your feet in Brugge are mesmerizing.

We enjoyed the B&B Coupure on Coupure, a few blocks from the town hall.

http://www.brugge.be/Verblijf/nl/gastenn.htm

I've never been to Brugge, but I've heard it's beautiful! However, I was in Antwerp in March this year. It was INCREDIBLE! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful architecture. Fantastic food. We stayed at a hotel with a huge room. Of course I don't remember the name, but I'll look it up and post here if you're interested. I was only there for a day (!) but I'm very anxious to return. *Fantastic* jewelry buys!

Jennifer

Please go to Brugge! You will fall in love. We went there, and Antwerp, last summer and there is no comparison, if you want a walk-able or bike-able historic town vs. a city with an interesting church and some good art. Brugge has enough to keep you happy for days--the only Michaelangelo sculpture outside of Italy to start. It's awesome. We stayed at Hotel Adornes with canal view. email: [email protected]
Sam

I've been to Brugge several times; each time took my breath away as if that was a first visit. Until I was informed that the lion's share of the city is a reconstruction... i.e. Disneyland...Somehow the magic faded since.

I've been to Brugge and I've been to Disneyland. The poster who said that is either making it up or very stupid. Brugges is real (I love Disneyland but it's not "real" and anyone can tell that). Brugge is everything the other posters said. If you have the chance to go don't pass it up. We stayed at Hotel Ensor (it's on the web - go to Google) which was not fancy but very nice, wonderful breakfast, on a canal. I'd stay there again.

Brugges is NOTHING like Disney and it is unfair to compare practical repair and maintenance of an ancient village with plywood, smoke and mirrors that originated in California in the 1950s.

Without question - Brugges.
Brugges is a town with such charm and uniqueness. It's probably my favorite place in Europe. Very walkable and with many canals. Lots of great chocolate shops, as well as the mussels and frites restaurants.

BRUGGE! Went to Brugge and Antwerp in March, and I enjoyed Brugge much more.

We rented an apartment in Brugge, so I don't have hotel recommendations. For beer, though, I highly recommend De Garre (down an alley off the Markt) and Brugs Beertje.
