BritRail Pass - Quick question

If you purchase a first class ticket are you permitted to ride in second class? Part of our trip will be with friends who won't have first class tickets?

I don't see why not- just ask when you get there, but why would you want to do that? When you see the difference you'll want to stay where you are. One is crowded, some even standing, the other you get huge club chairs, tables and coke served on, YES, ICE!

Dear Lolita: Theoretically you SHOULD be able to travel with your friends (though Tricia is absolutely right, first class is FAR more comfortable). You'll find it depends to some extent on how the conductor feels about it. On French and German trains I've been asked to sit in First Class when I held a First Class ticket. On short trips (when the conductor sometimes didn't get through the train to check tickets before we had to change trains), we sat where we pleased. Good trip! Joan

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to slum it in standard class if you want to. At one time it was possible to upgrade some standard class tickets to first for a token amount, so your friends could travel with you, but this may not be possible now all the companies are privately owned. Its worth asking at the ticket office.

You certainly can travel in standard (2nd) class if you
wish, but if you have a seat and others are standing,
the conductor may ask you to move into first class.
But as the guy above said, you will often find on
the main InterCity trains that your friends can
upgrade for about three or four pounds - but this
is at weekends only and is called 'Weekend First'.
Also, as he said, the trains are all now run by
different private companies and altbough passes
are valid on all, special offers like Weekend First
are not, so it is best to check.
