Bratislava to...where?

Bratislava to...where?
If my dear spouse has a business trip in Bratislava at the end of September, where might we go from that jumping-off point?
SkyEurope, centred in Bratislava, has all sorts of flights to central and western Europe. We like Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Rome, Venice -- all easily accessible from Bratislava. But we have been to all those places in 2004 and 2005.
We thought "Croatia, for a real change from the familiar". Or maybe Ljubljana/ Slovenia.
We would have about 2 weeks. Faute de mieux, we would opt for friendly, familiar France....
We like: Food, history, architecture, cultural sites, interesting people, striking scenery.

Why not hire a car and explore some of Slovakia and/or Moravia in the Czech Republic? The Tatra mountains in Slovakia are beautiful as is the area round the Beskydy mountains in Moravia. There are interesting towns, villages and beautiful scenery and you would probably find it incredibly cheap once you're there.

Funny, my wife will be in Bratislava in late September. Without me. As you say, we've also already been to all of those places. The next time I accompany her, we're going to spend the time exploring Slovakia. Before it gets Westernized.
If you aren't fazed by the lack of English, I would suggest that you explore Slovakia, which is mostly still Old Europe, unlike all of those other places you mentioned.
If you want something new but more "comfortable," then Croatia's just the ticket. Much more English spoken there. And SkyEurope has inexpensive filghts from Bratislava right into Dubrovnik. Check out an earlier post about Montenegro, south of Dubrovnik.
