Boxing Day Gift???

I was told that the appropriate thing to do on visiting someone in the UK on Boxing Day is to bring along a gift. Normally, I'd bring something along anyway (eg, a bottle of wine), but I was told that not just anything is an "acceptable" Boxing Day present (I got the exasperated, "You Americans...", and then they wouldn't explain!)

Am I getting the right information, or am I being misled?? If the former, what would make an okay gift?

Thanks!

It's not a custom I've ever encountered.

Obviously, many of us will be making the rounds of people we give presents to on Boxing Day. But that doesn't sound the case with you.

In fact, what you've been told sounds like a setup. Just take the bottle of Californian Chardonnay, or the poinsettia

Never heard of that one. Although if I was going for lunch/dinner I would take a bottle of wine (which is not specific to Boxing day, just normal practice).

I hope you responded to these awful people, who ever they were, with "oh, you Brits" even more exasperated.
