As a former student of Trinity, I can tell you that the queues during the day do get pretty long...however I think it moves fairly quickly. Earlier in the day would be better though! Also worth trying while you're there is the walking tour of Trinity - the ticket booth and starting point is just under front arch when you enter. The tours are conducted by students and give you a great insight into the history of the college.
I'm afraid they don't have advance booking for the Book of Kells!

Earlier is better but it won't be too long a wait as Cailin mentioned. I walk by the area a lot taking my short cut home and there are lines in the summer but nothing to get worried about. You will not spend hours waiting to get in

Hi there--this past September, we went first thing on a Saturday morning got there before opening and already there was a long line, however, as other posters mentioned it moved quickly--in fact, we were impressed with how quickly it moved given the crowd so don't feel discouraged if you see a line.

My biggest disappointment when I visited Dublin was not being able to see the d@%# Book of Kells last June. We got in a long, long line and while the line moved rather quickly through the exhibit (very interesting), once we got to the display case with the actual Books, I couldn't see a thing. Nor could anyone else in our tour group. A bunch of obnoxious pseudo-intellectuals blocked the view for at least ten minutes while they pontificated to the expense of everyone else waiting. I'm not a patient dude so I stormed away. My more patient wife and kids waited longer but still saw very little. Maybe a guard to hurry people along would be welcome.
