Bodensee

We will be staying in Schruns, Austria, for 9 days and would like to go to the Bodensee for a day. Should we go to Konstanz, Stein-Am-Rhein and Schaffhausen OR Bregenz, Lindau and Friedrichshafen!? Is the whole roundtrip to much for one day? Thank you!

It depends on what you like the place has some great ferries, an island with a garden, there is a Zepplin museum, a giant aquarium and a rebuilt pre-history village before you get to fortresses, churches, wine etc.

Don't bother to drive the whole way around and if you did it in detail you would need a couple of days.

This may help, it is bike focused but some good ideas inside

I wasn't too impressed with Konstanz, but perhaps it was raining or something when I was there. When I've been in that area, I've always been driving, and I was intimidated by how busy the traffic looked in Lindau, so I have never been in that city.

I loved Meersburg and have stayed there twice. We took a boat trip to Mainau Island, the flower island and spent some hours strolling around the island admiring the flowers and the butterfly house. There's a lovely walking trail, which I believe extends to Lindau.

I also liked Stein am Rhein a lot. It was a pleasant place for an afternoon of wandering around, looking at the Wohnmuseum (everyday life museum in 19th century) and the abbey museum.

The first time I went to Bodensee, I was coming from the north, and there was a lot of traffic around Friedrichshafen. It was a difficult drive at that time.

It looks like you will have an autobahn much of the way, whichever choice you make. You might want to check on viamichelin.com for approximate driving times, though you should probably add on some extra time. I think they underestimate driving times.

I think that either of those trips will make for a long day.

I would go to Lindau and Meersburg. Admission fee to Island Mainau is outrageous IMO. A ferry trip would be nice, too. I like Konstanz a lot, but wouldn't visit on the same day as Lindau. Everything beyond Konstanz is too far for a day trip, I'd say.

And why not Bregenz first? It has a nice lake promenade, too, and you could hop on a ferry to Lindau there.
