One thing that most posters should always do first, IMO, is do a google search for whatever sight they plan to visit.
Most tourist sights have web pages that provide basic visitor information such as opening and closing times, admission fees, and transportation details.

FYI: Of interest I just finished reading Duchess about John and Sara Churchill and the building of Blenheim. Its a paperback not all that expensive - sounds like it was a nightmare to get build with being in and out of favor but had a lot of interesting history on the place.
