Black Forest Germany
We are going on a three week trip to Germany to see family. One of the weeks we are headed to the Black Forest on our own. We are thinking of three nights in Freiburg and three nights in Baden Baden. We plan on taking day trips from each place and just exploring the two towns where we are staying. We have a good road map and travel guides.
We like to hike, tour churches and other historic buildings, and drive through the countryside. We will be there mid to late September.
Unfortunately our family in Munich has never been there and the only advice given is that Baden Baden is expensive. So if any of you have any tips or must see places, please share them.
Thanks.

If you have a car, instead of staying 3 days in Baden Baden, I would stay in a smaller town and visit Baden Baden for a day. In the northern part of Black Forest, Bad Herrenalb or larger Freudenstadt would be my choice. Freiburg is a nice place to stay in Southern Black Forest and well located for trips into the hills or across the Rhine into Alsace.

I too would skip Baden-Baden.
Loved Gengenbach as a home base, visiting Alpirsbach and the regional outdoor 'museum' in Gutach, and Triberg, as day trips.
If you like a city, Freiburg is great. For a small town option, base 20 minutes away in Staufen, and day trip TO Freiburg.

Freiburg is a great town, we stayed there a few years ago. One thing we really enjoyed was the tram up the Schauinsland. We drove from Freiburg to the base of the tram, plenty of parking in the lot. Here is a link: Freiburg Germany | Tourist | Hotels Guide - Take a ride on the Schauinsland Cable Car We just went up and back, but I think you can also hike down or on the mountain.
From Freiburg we next went to Lindau on Lake Konstanz; we just stopped there for lunch on our way to Garmisch, wish we had planned to spend 2 nites on the lake.

Thank you for all the responses. My husband had the cable car ride on his list. I also like the idea of staying in the smaller towns and going on day trips to the bigger towns.
We’ll have to check out the farm apartment. One of our highlights was visiting a farm museum when we went to the Allgäu a few years back.
