Big flaw with Foder's new fromat
When trying to respond to a message, I find that if I try to get to another website to get information and then try to get back to my original response, everything is lost. Not
only that, if you have a program such as e-wallet, by cancelling it because it asks to fill out the cookie that Fodors has put in regarding your name and email address, all is lost again.
They really have a bug they don't know how to handle.

You may find there's a better way to do what you want.

You can open another browser window quite easily, which is the way most would do it when researching a response. In MS IE you can just type a Ctl/N or go to File|New>Window. In Netscape it's
File|New Window, and the same keyboard shortcut, Ctl/N.

On any complex, database-driven site like Fodors' one can't depend on getting back to exactly where one was if you use the window to go off somewhere. I don't think I'd really classify the issue as a bug.

twenj

I'm not exceptionally computer literate, but I could never do what you're suggesting on the old format. If I got email and went to read it, I always lost Fodor's. Now that isn't true. I'm not sure what Rex and Ed are saying, but at least I don't lose Fodor's when I go to another site. And being able to click an http: listed in a message or direct email a response to a poster and still retain the thread I'm following is an incredible bonus from the old format!

You also appear to be working with a single browser window, Patrick. Just go through the operation outlined by Ed, start to use multiple browser windows and you'll never go back to use a single window again

What I don't like in the new application design is the left frame refreshing every time one posts a reply. If one's way down the list, say, replying to thread 124 one gets thrown to the first 50 and has to start going down the list from scratch once again. The way that I go around it is to hit Stop (page loading) as soon as the right frame refreshes after posting. Also, it's possible to get any number of threads in the left frame (say, 100, 250 instead of the standard 50). If one replies to any post (or posts a new message), the left frame is refreshed back to standard.

Paulo

Paulo,

The solution to having the left-hand frame (column) refresh is to open a new window just for the thread on which you wish to post a reply.

Leave the window alone that has the database at 124 or wherever you wish to be. And I don't use "next 50" anymore. I look at 500 at a time.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.cfm?fid=2&sort=date&rows=500& amp;start=1
Anna and others:

Posting a reply:

I agree that the left window should not be refreshed when one posts a reply. Unless or until Fodors decides to change it,

there's a way to easily avoid the problem.

Instead of left-clicking on "post a reply", right click and select Open Link in New Window (in MS IE). In Netscape it's also a right click and select Open in New Window.

Yes, aaa, that's exactly what I do. I READ the forum threads using the URL you listed (with 250 instead of your 500
and I do open a new window to reply to a post. This works fine for me (and you). But what about the "average" user?

Very few people here have "discovered" that it is possible to have more than 50 threads in the left frame by using the appropriate URL. The same regarding opening a new window for posting a reply.

To me, Anna represents the average user. She orderly reads the threads from 1 to 50, replies eventually, goes on to the next 50 and gets frustraded to be thrown to the first 50 when if she posts a further reply.

Anna now knows she's got two options to go around the new application deficiencies: a) to hit STOP as soon as the right frame is loading or; b) to throw the thread she wants to reply to, to a new window. But what about all the Annas out there that haven't had the chance to go thru this thread?

Paulo

I have found the the conflict I'm having is between this Fodors website and my E-Wallet program.
Since Fodor is using cookies to prefill my name and email adress, E-Wallet pops up and wants to fill in my real name and address, rather than my alias. So when I tell it to cancel, it refuses to let me use an alias and takes me to the Fodors home page. Weird! I guess I'll have to add an additional user name to see if I can get around it.
