I just read about this today. This virus is named Goner. (It also has a couple other names.) In addition to spreading itself through email, it also tries to shut down virus protection and firewalls allowing other attacks. It is also able to spread via ICQ.

This just affected my company yesterday. If you need to get rid of it, I can email you and attach it (the "vaccination"). But keep in mind, if a co-worker hasn't cleaned their computer with it, their computer will keep sending the message.

The "Hi" message is the only way this virus has appeared so far. As long as you don't download the attachment, you're fine.

As a side note, I mentioned last week about a possible virus that I thought I had opened from Italy and I think someone called it Badtrans. I tried to bring up that thread but couldn't find it. At the time I thought I had escaped unharmed, but ran a scan and found that I had three files with W32.Badtrans.B@mm. Have spent all day today cleaning it out and hope I have succeeded. This is apparently one that happens by opening a blank attachment that comes from a hotel you have communicated with. Meanwhile this site has now lost its ability to rembember my name and email. Can anyone tell me how to restart that feature?

I got an email message from a hotel in Hallstatt that was infected with the Badtrans virus. Fortunately, our email provider caught it and deleted the attachment. Of course, I had to write back to the hotel, tell them about the virus and ask them to resend the attachment.
