Best way to get from southern Spain to Algarve

We're planning a trip to the Iberian peninsula for September, but are a little bit stuck on the best way to get from southern Spain to the Algarve. I know there is no nonstop air option, and we would rather not drive. Does anyone have good insight on the train or bus options in this area? Thanks in advance!

Driving will be too expensive if you're having to leave your hire car in a different country, as the hire company will normally levy a big charge.

This should be an easy one, but it isn't and it's almost as if the two countries don't want to connect two holiday areas too easily. The bus appears to be the best option as flying means that you have to connect via Madrid etc. and therefore the flight time can be enormous. There is a train I think, but it connects through Seville, if my memory serves, but I'm unsure whether it still runs and how long it takes.

There is one bus that leaves at around 1:30am, so avoid if possible. The only other alternative is to drive, plan your route and drop off one car in Spain and pick up the Portuguese one across the border, maybe Ayamonte or Huelva, but that's messy too.

In your case, taking the bus is the only logical option.

Thanks for the responses! Believe me, I'd love to drive it all, but the budget doesn't allow for it. Sounds like a bus to the border is the way to go, and then maybe a train/car rental once in Portugal. How doable is the Algarve using the train?

I actually found that the only nonstop flight from Spain into Faro is an Air Berlin one from Palma de Mallorca, so there isn't even one from MAD or BCN.
