Best way from Lucca to Amalfi Coast

Hello Fodorites:

We are planning on spending a week in Lucca, Italy in June and would like to spend an additional 3-4 days on the Amalfi coast. What's the best way to get to the Amalfi coast? We'd like to avoid Rome and use the Pisa airport or better yet, the train.
Thanks for any help.

I will assume that "we" is two people. The train connections will take you via Rome to Naples--likely with 2 connections. From Naples there is a local commuter train to Sorrento or a private driver for about 100E. Very doable, but you have to want to. If you are 4 people I would get a car.

Hi a,

Train to Florence.

Train to Salerno via Rome.

Ferry from Salerno to Amalfi or Positano.

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):

You have to change trains in Rome, but this route is much nicer than taking the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento and then the bus and much cheaper than hiring a limo from Naples.

Enjoy your visit.

I know you specified Amalfi, but if you are seeking a relax on the coast, have you considered the Ligurian seaside? Much easier to reach from Lucca than Amalfi..

Takes at least a full day to get to Amalfi from Lucca by train. Flying is the best option. Just because Liguria and Amalfi are on the sea does not mean that they offer the same experience. Remember, Italy is regional.
