seems like to get to Victoria would be a lot longer than to Blackfriars and GEX is also 15 quid more expensive and would take longer -not sure why you are even thinking of GEX?

If the object is to get from LCY to Gatwick by public transport, why not take the DLR to Tower Gateway, walk round to Tower Hill and then District/Circle to Blackfriars? You'd still have some rush-hour crush to contend with, but you'd be closer to the surface rather than in deep tunnels. But it is about a hundred yards from Tower Gateway to Tower Hill, and IIRC there are steps down to the platform there.

This whole thing has caused a major "re-evaluation" of a portion of this trip and just for fun and excitement (and if anybody wants to pile on and do their "I wouldn't do that" number, be my guest) I'll let you know what the "new" itinerary is.
As I am sure many others do, the plan has been influenced by many factors and in this case my Husbear's interests, etc.
So, after doing that Tattoo in Edinburgh (again, and I swore after the last time and the wind and the rain and the carnival acts...please, can we have MORE bagpipes and less of whatever it was???) we will take the train to Manchester, rent a car and stay in Buxton for a three nights so we can do Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall, and other ramblings.
Drive to Broadway (as a mid-point and we have been before) for one night and the on to Falmouth for our four nights there.
Will drop the car at Heathrow and since we have theatre tickets, travel into the city for one night, dinner and the show, sleep, back to the airport in the morning and fly home.
Giving up some Scotland spectacular scenery for some activities which will be more pleasing to the failing health Husbear (form better or worse, remember).
I deeply, DEEPLY appreciate all of the recommendations and offers/suggestions. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
