Best Time to Visit Venice
I recently came back from my first trip to Italy. I only got to spend 6 hours in Venice and it is a City I would love to come back to. When is a good time to visit Venice - is it May or October time frame.

May or October are both "shoulder" season; Venice is already crowded, but not as crowded as it gets in June or is in September. I prefer May, because the days are getting longer rather than shorter and there is less chance of encountering "acqua alta" or the periodic flooding of lower-lying areas of Venice.

I really loved the last week of November. The weather isn't great but there were NO crowds or lines anywhere; restaurants were easy to reserve; got the chance to really meet and talk to locals. Also, prices for air and hotels is rock bottom.

How bad is it in March? We'll be traveling during spring break next year, planned to spend 3 nights there March 21-24, but now am worried about flooding and cold weather. Is it worth the trip up from Rome at that time of year, or would we be better off extending the Rome stay?

The fisrt time I was in Venice was in April 2002 and the weather was beautiful. It was kind of cold but the days were beautiful. It was at Easter, so there were a lot of people.
Last year, I went to Venice at the end of June. It was kind of hot, but I didn't think it was unbearable or something. I thought it was OK. The sun set at around 11pm, so days were very long. I didn't have AC in my hotel room and, to be honest, I didn't feel it was necessary. There weren't as many people as in April. I'd travel again in June.
This year I'm going back in the middle of September. I have read that it's a good time of the year to visit Venice in terms of weather, although I have been told that it's high season so I guess there will be a lot of people.
