I have been to Germany 6 or 7 times. It's an excellent place for an American to travel, since many people speak the language and are used to tourists. It is a beautiful and diverse country that by my subjective metric... is friendly.

My favorite destination has been Munich. We always stay by the Hbf and train allover Bavaria for day trips. These include (forgive the spellinG):

Neuschwanstein
Salzburg Salt Mine (cool, kitchy)
Berchtesgaden
Garmisch
Rothenburg (o der Tauber... be careful)
Kloster Andechs (A mecca for beer lovers)
Dachau
The beer gardens of Munich
Schloss von Nymphenberg

One of the best tour guides to Munich (besides Fodors ) is "The beer lovers guide to Munich" They just released a new version... It is a great read, and makes it simple to get around Munich to see the best beer gardens and other sights.
