Best route? Shannon to Moher Cliffs to Galway

I was hoping to stop by the Cliffs of Moher on my way from Shannon to Galway. Someone else not arriving at Shannon will be driving, so at least the driver will not be tired. Plus it gives us something to do while waiting for hotel check in.

Do I have to drive almost into Galway to get to the Cliffs from Shannon?

It seems from the map I wouldn't have to, but then again, the shortest route isn't necessarily the easiest.

Thank you so much.

The cliffs are about 80kms from Galway so I'm confused as to why you would think you would have to drive as far as there.

To get to the cliffs from Shannon, take the N18 to Ennis, and then the N85 to Ennistymon, the N67 to Lahinch and then the R478 to Liscannor and the Cliffs.

To get from the Cliffs of Moher to Galway, take the N69 to Kilcolgan, and then the N6 to Galway.

You can get more detailed explanations on www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes

I spoke to my cousin's friend who lives in Galway. He said that I would have to almost go into Galway to get to the Cliffs, so that I might as well go to the hotel, drop off my bags and freshen up.

Looking at the map , it didn't seem like that was the best information - but then again, I'm only reading a map - and he lives there.

That is why I thought I'd ask the experts here - for another opinion.

Thanks.

Don't go to Galway 1st. Depending on the route (Michelin's was slightly longer) you would add 60+ miles to you drive and probably about 2 hours driving time.
