Best route for N. Italy Trip
The help on this site has been wonderful!
My itinerary is Padova - 4 nights
Castelrotta - 4 nights
Valtellina Region - 4 nights
Como - 4 nights
Orta - 3 nights
If you were staying in these towns after mid-Sept. what order would you see them in given that I prefer train and bus transportation, occasionally a car. I don't have a preference where I fly in or out of although it appears from posts here that getting to Malpensa after a lake stay is quite doable. Thanks for the advice.

I have only been to a limited portion of your itinerary, but it's worth mentioning that you have four arrival airports to choose from - - and three (or two) might not be obvious to you. Besides Venice Marco Polo (VCE) which is the only airport with a lot of "major" international destinations (and the only transatlantic service), you could also connect from one or more other Europe gateway cities to:
VRN - - Verona
VBS - - Brescia (called "Verona [Brescia]" by Ryanair
(Venice) Treviso - - I think maybe this is TVS? - - also served by Ryanair
Other airlines undoubtedly serve some of these airports - - see www.whichbudget.com
Best wishes,
Rex

well, I love the itinerary, as you might guess, but you sure will need a car to see those areas. I am curiuos why Padova and not Venice.
I would fly into Venice and depart from Milan. Buona fortuna !

WHY not Venice, well,I've never been, but am often told its super crowded, never to go on a weekend and it's very expensive. I'm open to hearing why I should base there rather than day trip from Padova.

Most of the best places in the world to visit are subject to these comments.
The two best hours of the day in Venice are the two that "day-trippers" never see: the last hour before you go in to bed... and the first hour (immediately) after you wake up - - when you can see Venice wake up and come to life. I strongly advise staying there for a minimum of one or two nights, if you have never been there. And go straight from your bed to the streets in the morning when you wake up - - a 30 minute stroll then is priceless - - then you can go back to your hotel, shower, breakfast, put on your face for the day, whatever...

Oh... one more comment... since, you're right, it IS expensive. So - - don't start there with your first day or two in Italy. Use a "less spectacular" (and less expensive) place to get over that sleep-deprived trans-atlantic flight - - and go to Venice once you've adjusted to Italy a bit.

Hi janemc,
>My itinerary is Padova - 4 nights...<
I urge you to change that to Venice and visit Padua as a daytrip.
Check these two places for accomodations at about the same rates as the Du Lac.

Two quick points:
1. I strongly agree with those favoring a stay in Venice. It is my favorite city in the world, and even better at night.
2. If you end up departing from Malpensa, I can tell you that the drive from Orta San Giulio is quick and easy...far better than I thought it would be.
Enjoy!
