Leaving for Rome tomorrow, stopover in Heathrow. Better to get a few Euros in either of those airports so we have money for the train into Rome that night? Which one would be better?

I was in Heathrow a few weeks ago and needed euros. I didn't find an ATM that dispened anything other than pounds. There might be one somewhere but I had no luck. On the other hand, you can surely find an ATM in Rome airport before exiting the terminal.

The worst exchange rate out there is to buy them at your departing US airport. I'd wait until Rome but it's never a bad idea to have more than 1 ATM card from separate accounts in case you are in Rome and 1 of your ATMs doesn't work. I learned that lesson the hard way.

There are ATMs in Rome (FCO) near the baggage carousels.

Exchange about $90 for E and about $15 for GBP at the departure airport.

It will cost you about $5 more than getting money in Europe, but you won't have to look for ATMs when you are jetlagged and disoriented.

I second ira's advice. Have a little bit of wampum before you leave the dollar zone.

Standing around waiting for your luggage in the Rome airport is NOT what I'd call "looking for ATM's while jet lagged". I'd honestly wait until you get to Rome and use one of the ATMs while you're waiting for your luggage. If for some reason it doesn't work, then stop and use one of several on you way through the "lobby" after you get your luggage.

By the way, you can charge your train tickets with a credit card.
Too late to schedule a shuttle I guess, which I find at 35 euro a better deal than two train tickets plus a taxi in Rome.
