Best of Germany in 3 weeks or less

My husband and I want to celebrate our 30th anniversary in Germany. We'll have up to 3 weeks in September/October, but don't want to spend every other day moving to a new hotel in a new city. We'd be thrilled to spend 3 or 4 nights in the same place, taking day trips to worthwhile sites. We'd love to experience good food, castles, museums, beautiful scenery, music...
Looking for must-sees or must-dos. Open to any part of Germany, though it seems Amsterdam is the most budget friendly entry point for us, so perhaps starting in the west?

Before you decide that Amsterdam is cheapest, be sure to factor in the transportation costs to where you are going.

Germany is only about the size of a fairly large state in the USA but there is a great diversity of tourist sights. "Must sees" are only in the viewers mind. We are all of differing points of view. If what you want to see if Lederhosen and Alpine villages, it does no good for someone to tell you that Berlin is the place not to miss, or vice-verse. I like small towns, you might like big cities.

There are castles, museums, and beautiful scenery in all corners of the country. They come different flavors. A good, comprehensive guide book is the easiest place to start in my opinion. I like Eyewitness Guides and Michelin Green Guides but have also used Fodor's and Lonely Planet Guides. You might start with what is available in your library.

Three weeks in any part of Germany in September-October would be wonderful for me.

Congratulations!
Germany in the fall is a gorgeous place for an anniversary celebration.
If this is your first trip to Germany, I would suggest breaking it up into three parts - one week in three locations.
Location #1 - Since it is fall, a "must do" is one of the wine regions and a visit to a wine fest. The Rhine, the Mosel, the Ahr are all good choices.
Location #2 - Dresden and surrounding area. Do a search her on Fodors for lots of suggestions on what to do and day trips.
Location #3 - Bavaria/Franconia. I'd pick a nice town like Bamberg, with good train connections. From there you can visit Munich and the Alps and the Romantic Road.

Have fun, whatever you choose.

Ironically, my husband and I celebrated our 30th anniversary by spending 17 days in October 2007 touring from the Mosel to Munich. Here's a link to my trip report:

Have fun planning your trip.

My husband and I spent 3 weeks last September touring Franconia, Rhine & Mosel valleys, upper Bavaria and driving the castle road. We loved it and are planning a return to Germany and Austria this year. We did not go north into Berlin since we had already been there before.

Here's a link to our trip report which includes our blog from our trip. Happy travels.
