The main reasons we bought in Nice were the fact that it is an open all year place with a very pleasant climate throughout the winter: encouraging you to get out and be active, allowing you to have lunch outside in the sun and even sunbath on the beach every month of the winter.
We were very struck by the number of older people out and about and being active in winter: coming from the north of Scotland, winter is very much a time when older people in particular often stay indoors a lot. Nice having an extra two hours of daylight per day in January than where we live was also a bonus.

Nice advertises itself as being a place where you can ski in the morning and sail in the afternoon.

In that case, Marseille is even better (and cheaper). Maybe not as close to a ski resort, but with climate change, finding snow in the southern Alps is becoming a snipe hunt. Marseille allows you to make plans to go to either the Alps or te Pyrénées depending on conditions.

Briançon is 3 hours from Marseille, Barèges is six.
