Best driving route : Langhe to Nice

We are "considering" drivng from Barolo (Italy) to Nice (France) in mid September. Which route would be fastest, least confusing, pose less potential for delay and still have some esthetics, through the mountains, or the coastline? Along the coast, one incident on the autostrada could result in long delays, the alternate coastal route be slow due to tourism. I'm used to mountain travel, so I realize nothing is a straight route. We've been to Monaco, Nice and Marsille (so we won't be stoppping), and while I love to view the waters edge, I know it comes with a price. Do the tolls and the road conditions impact this decision? Our time frame is one day.

The autostrada route (A6 to Savona, then A10) is pretty scenic and the fastest way. I would recommend it.

For a scenic shortcut (however a little time-consuming), you can take the S28 to Garressio and from there the scenic P582 to the A10.

An alternate route would be to take the (boring) road to Cuneo and from there over the Col de Tende and then a moderately scenic mountain road (D6204) to Menton.

Agree with trav 1959. Drove from Avignon to Langhe (near Nizza Monferrato) and back a few years ago. Took the A6 and A10, driving right past Nice. The total distance was a bit over 500 km each way, and we made it in about 5 hours, no problems. Very nice scenery.

Thanks to both of you. My main concern was the traffic on the coast. I personally did not want to do the mountain route (we live in them) and it would be rather "common". The 5 hour time frame is perfect and of course there are the great views. Just knowing it's that short drive is comforting. You just saved me another day, I thought is would be longer. We could easily stop for an overnight along the way before landing in the Luberon. Fodorites never fail me. Anyone know of any great places to stay so we can visit the Calanques? I think I post that! This is one happy gal!

Oh, driving time from Barolo to Nice will be around 3 hours, not 5. It is 5 hours to Avignon.
