Best area for a single lady in her 40s to stay in Vienna
I'm going to be in Greece working and am thinking maybe I will fly to Vienna for a few days before heading home. (An open jaw ticket is the same as roundtrip to/from Athens.) I've done a ton of traveling in Europe, lived in Paris at one time but, have never been to Austria. What area would be the best for me to stay in? I'm wanting easy, inexpensive access to the airport via bus or train and also a good area to be in where I can wander to the sights and soak up Vienna. I'm looking for very budget but safe accommodations. Even a place with a kitchenette would be great. I'd be there for 3-4 days at the end of May. Thanks so much!!

I've stayed at the Hotel Lucia on Hutteldorfer Strasse. It's not very centrally located, but it's near the subway (Ubahn) and it's not expensive as Vienna goes.
The subway is everywhere. It's easy to take public transportation to the airport. As I recall, there's a fast train that leaves from a train station that will get you there lickety split.
As far as safe accommodations, I have never felt unsafe anywhere in Vienna, but then I don't wander around much at night.

There heaps of apartments in Vienna and some are much cheaper than hotels. They have a range that should suit all budgets. We are staying in the Margareten area (which is close the the centre and also not too far from the airport) at the end of May and have booked an apartment for 2 nights. I found it on TripAdviser.com and you can also get reviews of the apartments. I believe the public transport is very easy to use and quite safe in Vienna.

I would recommend that you stay in the city center for your visit. this known as the First District or Innere Stadt.
postal code 1010
Very easy walking distence to major sites as Hofburg Palace, State Opera, Stephansdom, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Albertina, Spanish Riding School and much more .
Excelent selection of restaurants in all categories and many nice Vienna cafes- many with outside seating to enjoy the sun and the passing world while enjoying food and drink.
Staying in the center allows enjoyment day or night and an easy and safe return to your hotel.
Vienna is known as a safe city and you cn most probably feel comnfortable walking day or night .
Several city center places
Pension Suzanne, Pension Pertschy, Pension Nossek
Hotel Austria.
Apartments Sacher
Staying in city center means easy access to /from airport visa airport tansfer bus
6 euro and 25 minute trip to Morzinplatz - Hotel Austria is nearby also by this stop you find streetcars and UBahn to take you as you wish.
The train connection to / from the airport by Sbahn or CAT train is at Wien Mittee- conveient to city center
Depending on your airline you can check in , check luggage and obtain boarding card is using the CAT at Wien Mitte- makes your return very easy to the airport.

I'm a single lady in my '60's. I stayed at the Hotel Austria and loved it. Close to St. Stephen's and GREAT shopping! I am known as The Hotel Queen in my family bc I usually find great deals. This was definitely one of them.

We stayed at Pension Suzanne in May 2005. It was a lovely place but has no A/C. The 3 days we were there the temperatures were in the 90's & if we opened a window at night we had noise from the beer garden across the street.
Just something to consider... But I did, on balance, like Pension Suzanne very much.

If you're feeling adventurous, I recently booked a 5* hotel, Le Meridien Vienna, on Hotwire for a fraction of the price I could find it elsewhere. I was also considering Pension Suzanne, but didn't hear back & this opportunity arose, so I ended up with it instead. With on-line blind bidding, you're not SURE what you're buying until after the purchase is complete, but it might be worth considering. I found the Vienna prices a bit high myself.
