Berlin-Prague-Vienna-Budapest-Italy

Me and my friend are taking a month long trip to eastern europe. This is what we have decided so far
Day1 - arrive in Berlin morning
Day 2, 3 - Berlin
Day 4 - mid morning train to Prague
Day 5, 6, 7 - Prague
Day 8 - mid morning train to Vienna
Day 9,10 - Vienna
Day 11 - leave for Salsburg for one night
Day 12 - salsburg to Budapest
Day 13, 14, 15 - Budapest
Day 15 - fly to Rome for 10 days in Rome

I have a few questions:
a) Do you thin these are enough days in these places? We like fast paced trips and things to do.
b) Should we increase or decrease our time in any city? We are not much into museums and stuff barring a few. We prefer more tourist sight seeing stuff etc.
c) We will be mostly taking trains to travel from one city to other. I did research on Eurail pass and it doesn't make sense for us. My question is when would be a good time to buy the train tickets? Should we buy them once we are in the city or buy them in advance. Our day and time should pretty much be locked in. Is there a huge difference in prices? Can you please recommend what websites to look for to buy these tickets.
d) We do not plan to rent a car at all during this phase. Do you think we should? We would prefer public transportation and walk.biking to experience a city.

On another thread you say you will spend 10 days in Italy. Now you say 10 days in Rome. Is that a mistake? Or is it 20 days in Italy?

I just answered your Italy post...and now I see this. Are you doing an amazing race? Seriously...in my humble opinion you're trying to do way too much and will spend too much time traveling, packing and unpacking.

Have you researched all your destinations? I find the more research I do the more I discover to see and the longer I want to stay in each place. You're going all the way to the Czech Republic for a 2 night stay in Prague? Why? We loved Prague and easily occupied ourselves for 4 nights. Salzburg deserves more time too...the Salt Mines, Hallstatt, Herrenchiemsee, the Lakes Area..to name just a few.

Again....give it some serious thought and research!

I apologize...I misread your post and now see you are in Prague more than 2 nights! That's a little better...although I still think you're rushing your trip.

I also think you're trying to cover too much geography in two weeks. And your plan is very city-centric. If you added a day to both Prague and Vienna, you could take day trips into the countryside for less museum-going, more sight-seeing options. IMO, the time you've allotted to Salzburg is hardly worth the effort. I suggest you spend at least one full day (two nights) there. If this were my trip, I would drop Budapest.

At an absolute minimum, I would re-order the destinations you're contemplating. Either Berlin-Salzburg-Vienna-Budapest-fly to Rome -OR- Berlin-Budapest-Vienna-Salzburg-train to Italy would make more sense. Where are you going in Italy besides Rome? If Venice is on your list, the train ride between Salzburg and Venice is very scenic.

Our plan is to just cover just the major cities in these states. The thing is I have never been to Europe and I am taking off from work for 3 months. I don't know if I will ever get such an opportunity again in my life, so I want to cover as many major cities as possible. I know it is gonna be rushed and lot os backpacking but I wanna do it. I do realize maybe I am being a little too ambitious but the way we are planning to travel will give us the flexibility to stay longer in a place if we like it.

@travelfan - How i wish I was doing Amazing race. I love that show!! I agree that 4 nights are absolute must in Prague. Salsburg was last minute squeeze in and as per our original plan, that might be the place that we might end up dropping. Would you refer salsburg over budapest?

@Jean - Thanks for reorder suggestions but I really really wanna do Prague. We are doing Italy for about 10 days. Mostly Rome, Florence and Venice. I will do some more research on the scenic route between Salsburg and Venice

itsvivek4u, my bad. I left Prague out of the two strings of cities by mistake. I don't suggest you drop Prague (after Berlin), but I do recommend you reconsider keeping Budapest. Salzburg can be explored in a day or two, but Budapest (and the time needed to get there) requires more days and Salzburg is the only small(er) town on your list. Taking Budapest out of the mix and adding days to the other cities will give you more flexibility to be spontaneous with day trips and/or give you more time in a place you're really enjoying.
