Bergen to Geiranger
We will be in July 2008 for 8 days on a Eurail pass. We were intending to spend 5 days around Bergin but would like to take the Bus from Bergen to Hellesylt (about 8 hours) then a ferry to Geiranger (about 1 1/2 hours). Has anyone done this trip? Are the buses reliable as I believe this is a local transport system. We will take three days to do the trip, having a day in Geiranger. We also wondered if a ferry service runs between Bergen and Geiranger. Any information at all would be great thankyou. We are doing the Norway in a Nutshell using our rail pass

I've never been to Geiranger, but the buses will be as reliable as others in Norway: it's a rich country with a very well developed transport system.
The only direct service from Bergen to Geiranger is by Hurtigruten (www.hurtigruten.com). The ships leave Bergen every evening at 2230 and get to Geiranger at 1330. One-way fare is NOK 1389, not including accommodation.
Public transport schedules for Norway are on www.rutebok.no.

Hi Wotuno--
This question is a month old, but i just read it. It's similar to my plans, but I am going to fly from Bergen to Alesund (cheapest way by far!) and hope to take a day trip to Geiranger by boat. Does anyone know for sure if this is possible? I know the Hurtgruten stops in Alesund before going into that fjord, so it must be possible to get on as a deck passenger.

The details are on the Hurtigruten website.
In summer, a ship leaves Ålesund daily at 0930, calls off Geiranger at 1330 and gets back to Ålesund before 1845. The one-way fare is NOK 308. Passengers for Geiranger disembark by tender.
