Bergen: Bed & Breakfast
My husband and I are planning a trip to Bergen in July 2001 and would like to know if there are any B&B's in Bergen. The cheapest hotel is about NK700 and coming from a country where we have mickey mouse money it is too much for us. Is there any cheaper accommodation available? We don't mind roughing it a bit.

If you would prefer a hotel, don't rule it out because of price until you actually get there and check with the room finding service at the TI. Hotels there really drop their prices when their rooms are fairly empty in the summer and on weekends. I was in Norway in Sept. and we got cheaper rates on hotel rooms on weekends than any I had seen advertised before the trip.
(There are also lots of rooms available in private homes. In the cities, they don't always include breakfast - so ask up front.)
Hi, Addy.
I happen to be Norwegian, living in Oslo, and this autumn I've done some research on Bergen accomodation for another guy on this forum. I think some of the stuff can be of interest to you, so I quote:

Marken Gjestehus? I know almost nothing, but the location is perfect, in the street that connects the railway station and the harbour. To my opinion, the extra cost for staying central is worth it. You will save lot of time, and lots of transport expenses (Montana-Bergen will be around NOK 40 one way for the two of you). And you can reach your base anytime you want throughout the day.
I searched the internet, and found some interesting sites. One of them had more centrally located pensions listed, and I fell in love with the Skansen Pension. To reach it you'll have to climb some steep streets, but I think you will have a very, very nice view from there. It is very close to the harbour and the Floi-banen entrance. The latter is a fenicular that takes you to the top of mount Floien, with marvellous views. A Bergen must!!! The ride is short, and if I were you, I would find my way down by foot, along the curvy pedestrian paths.
Skansen has their own website. Prices seem to be less than at Marken. 500 for a double, breakfast included, compared to Marken, where the price is around 205per person in a double, and with some 50-60 per person for breakfast.

There might also be other pensions to consider. I found them all on this page:
http://www.newtraveler.com/stories/featurestory6.html

Skansen Pensjonat is here(also in English):
http://www.skansen-pensjonat.no/
Seems to be few rooms, maybe booking early, at least an early call for imformations is advicable. I can help you.

To mee, Skansen is the favorite, then comes Marken

Welcome to Norway
Regards, Bjorn

Hi,

Not sure if you've made plans already, but I can add Crowded House Hotel to your list. It's clean and basic, located fairly centrally in Bergen (5 min walk through town to the Fish Market area). They have their own website--www.crowded-house.com. Because it's reasonably large it may be easier to find vacancies there.

You can also book private accommodation through the tourist office. They're about NOK 4-500 for a double (no breakfast).

I hate to contradict other posters' comments but I definitely wouldn't recommend Alsnaes. I stayed there (admittedly a couple of years ago) and it was kind of dirty (and I'm also used ot "roughing it" a bit).
