lmschmale, I'd rather spend every minute at The Lakes and none in Milan!

With only a few hours, I'd not go over to Lugano - stick to Bellagio and Varenna. OTOH, hang loose - go on the spur of the moment since, as you say, you're "pretty fast-paced on the go travelers".

And even as one absolutely devoted to Switzerland, I must say that you won't see much difference between Como and Lugano. That is, if you're expecting to see "Switzerland". J.

We were in Varenna in May and fell in love with this area of Italy. The best part of our stay was our visit to Villa Balbianello. I have never seen anything so beautiful. You must go and experience it. It's a long walk up, but very peaceful and breathtaking.

I wish I was there right now!

Imschmale,

Given your window of opprtunity to see Lake Como (Bellagio, Varenna) is so brief, you might be well advised (as suggested by Tuck) to make the most of it, and "do" Lugano during a future visit. Remember, always assume you will return!

As to posting a trip report, rest assured I will do that as our trip unfolds. Beginning at the start of August, you'll be able obtain our observations and descriptions of happenings at:

Finally, bashamj, thanks for your enthusiastic review of Villa Balbianello. While staying in Bellagio, I'll definitely make a point of touring it.
