We are driving there with a guide from Paris---any interesting villages or towns to stop at along the way? What to see when there? I heard that the German cemetery is worthwhile just as the American is.

Pointe Du Hoc is very cool to see-the spot where a special unit scaled the cliffs to destroy German weapons.

With only one day and driving, the German cemetery is an "add on" and there are more important places. Pointe du Hoc as mentioned, Arromanches, the american cemetery, and the American beaches will more than take up your day--even on up to St. Mere Eglise. If I recall correctly, the one particular point of interest is that the German responsible for the massacre at Oradour sur Glane is buried there.

I will add that there is a certain amount of repetition among the museums attached to the landing sites, and you may be able to go through some quite quickly thereby maximizing your time. Pointe du Hoc and Arromanches are particularly unique--as is St. Mere Eglise. The American Cemetery does have a map showing the entire theater, and that particular hallowed place deserves just some very quiet moments. The thing about the beaches that just stunned me was the exposure our troops faced--180* of open sea for the Germans to sight down on.
