Battle of Casino Memorial

I will be in Sorrento in early Oct. and would really like to visit the WWII Battle of Casino Memorial. My father fought there and I promised him I would go there one day. Can anyone help on where exactly it is and how to get there. Thanks

Barb: My father also fought there with the Canadian Army Tank Corps and I visited there in 1967. He only spoke about it once to us and you could see that if really affected him. Two of his childhood friends whom he volunteered with are buried there and I visited on behalf of him. Check out this site....... http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/philcurme/cass.htm

For my information, are Casino (Cassino) and Montecassino two different places?

Barb, I visited here back in '79 with the tour group I was on. Sorry I can't help with directions. Persevere with your enquiries; definately worth getting there.

Just read my kind of inadequate maps and found that the town of Cassino is right outside the Abbey of Montecassino, in southern Lazio, SE of Rome. To get there by car from Sorrento, drive toward Pompeii. Right before Pompeii, turn left (north) on the A-3 toward Naples. Before Naples but after Vesuvius, turn right (north) on the A-2, heading toward Caserta and Roma. Signposting should be good for this road. Cassino is right off the A-2, but a distance after Caserta. You will find the town and abbey will be well-marked. Sorry, I don't know how long it will take you to make the drive, but I'd estimate 2 1/2 hours. The cemetery at the abbey is breathtaking and very moving, well worth a visit, even if you didn't have the ties you do. Somebody else will have tohelp you with train travel, if that is what you need, but I would guess it is doable.

Hello Barb,

The British Cemetry and Commonwealth War Memorial is on the road from Cassino to Sant'Angelo in Theodice, south of Cassino. Will you be travelling by train?

Steve

Thanks for all the responses. My father was with the Canadian Engineers and was with the first troops on the scene. This battle had a huge affect on him, which really lasted his whole life. I will not have a car, so I was hoping I could get there by bus, or train if that is possible. And yes, Montecassino is the right name.

Barb - Have you thought of going from Rome rather than Sorrento? It's a quicker and easier option.

From Sorrento it's a minimum 3-hour journey via Naples. Naples-Cassino is a very infrequent, slow service. You may also have to change at Caserta, depending on what time you leave.

From Rome it's a 90-minute journey by train.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve
