waggis - yes I am shocked at my French friends (well ex-wife and mother of my French son) naivety - they have the same exact thing you describe in Orleans, France - a machine by the tram stop and most folks have passes and no conductor, etc.

But they were sincerely naive - not cheating on purpose - even though French they have their scruples! And one knows German too and I suppose the Basel machines have info in French as well as German?

They did love Basel however - a highlight being some trip out to some Rudolph Steiner place south of town!
