Barcelona to Seville - air vs. train

Hi All! My husband and I are meeting our nephew(2o years old) in Barcelona, spending a few days and then heading to Seville for a few days and then to Madrid for the last 3-4 days. I wondered if I could please get some feedback on whether it would be best to go from Barcelona to Seville by air or train? Some of the airlines (edream, Vueling) get terrible reviews. The train ride seems a bit long, but may be the way to go. I saw something about Avant Trains being as fast as AVE but less expensive. Does that seem legit? Can I use an Eurail Pass for either, and should I get that and make reservations ahead of time? Also, what is the difference between 1st and 2nd class? Thanks very much!

For train travel in Spain see: seat61.com/Spain-trains.htm

Short answer, you do NOT want any kind of pass for a single journey, you want to buy your tickets ahead of time for the cheapest fare, just like with planes. First class has fewer and bigger seats than second.

Have you considered stopping in Granada on the way and seeing the Alhambra?

As far as traveling from Barcelona to Sevilla, it's better to take the train, city center to city center, rather then heading out to the airport to fly, unless as you happen to be at the airport, making a connecting flight.

If you are in Barcelona, and taking the train, you omit the ordeal of arriving early enought to check in, clear security and wait for your gate to be called. And that includes having to sit in a narrow, cramped seat, even in business class.

Honeybear, our experience with Vueling hasn't been great, but Ryanair flies from BCN to SVQ. The flight is only 1 hour 50 minutes, and we actually liked the Ryanair flight better than Vueling, if that means anything.

In Barcelona, the bus picks up at Placa Catalunya, and takes 35 minutes to the airport.

In Seville, it's either a 30 minute bus or 15 minute taxi into town.

So by the time you add in all the waiting and travelling time to the flight, you're at roughly 5 hours.

Just giving a bit more info to help you make up your mind...personally I'd rather do the flight, but many people would prefer the 5 and a half hours of relaxation on the train.

Thanks everyone, we have booked the train and appreciate the input. The airline tickets were pretty high as we are only a few weeks out and it made more sense for us.
