Barcelona: moderate priced hotels, safe area
Will be in Barcelona for 5 days in Oct; it sounds exciting but a city in which to be careful. Any recommendations for attractive, moderate price (less than $100 a nite) hotels in safe, convenient areas? Thanks

last year I stayed at the rambla, Hotel Royal. This area is busy all day and night and there is always something to see. it is also near the metro, but most important, you can walk to almost all attractions in the city. Ask for a rambla front room. rates were about USD 90 in july 1997

Two years ago we stayed at Hotel Continental on Ramblas very reasonable, ask for room with balcony overlooking Ramblas.Phone 343 301 2570 fax 343 302 7360. Was a highlight of our Trip. BUT be very careful of thieves. We saw local Spanish tourists holiday ruined by thief on Ramblas taking handbag from seat and running off with it. Saw another thief brazenly trying to steal from Japanese tourists daypack in short distance from kerb to hotel enrance. Foiled by us aussie wrinklies who had more nerve than sense. All this on our first night there. So , great place Lois, but hang on to your bag tightly and keep it in front of you.
Bob

I highly recommend Hotel Citadines in Barcelona. It is newly renovated, reasonable (a family of four stayed for just under $100. last July and it included a kitchenette), and has a superb location - right on Las Ramblas (in spite of which it was not noisy and one time I had a room right on the street). It also has a quite nice buffet breakfast in a large airy room with a wall of windows overlooking Las Ramblas.

Try the Hotel (or Hostel) Australia, on the Ronda Universitat, conveniently located where the Ramblas ends and the Eixample begins. And best of all is Maria, the hotel keeper who speaks English and knows all about the city. A small, charming, inexpensive place, with baths in the room!
