Barcelona in August or not?

We had planned a few days in August for our first trip to Barcelona. In doing research I notice that a number of restaurants are closed in August and there are numerous references to the heat and polution that hangs heavy at this time of year. I had a really unpleasant time in Paris last time I visited in August for these reasons. We'll be coming from Provence and could go to Lake Como instead- or would love other suggestions.. Anyone survive Barcelona in August?

If you like over 100 degrees (40 celcius), herds of tourists, closed restaurants etc. - Then Barcelona in August is the place for you!

Wow, eri. You certainly know how to make a place sound appealing! Sounds a lot like my summer Paris experience. Looks like my new post asking about Verona might not be a moment too soon. Any differing opinions?

Regarding the heat, this year is not being as hot as usual - up to now, at least.

Well, now without being sarcastic... The last summers in Europe were very hot. Much hotter than before (global warming?). I was also caught a few years ago in Paris in August 3 or 4 years ago in an awful heat. It was absolutely unbearable. Barcelona is always hot in the summer. True, you might be lucky and catch a few better days, but who would want to take this chance on a vacation? The main problem is that many places are not even airconditioned. Why suffer?

Barcelona is hot and humid in August. If you do decide to go there I would recommend you spend your money on a hotel that is "charmingly" air conditioned just as you would spend your money on a hotel that is heated in the Winter.

As to restaurant closings...there are many, MANY restaurants that stay open in August.

As to "herds" of tourists..well, wherever YOu go I suppose you'll be adding to that so-called herd, now won't you?

I wouldn;t pass up this great city just because of the heat but if it is that big an issue I suggest you visit some other time of year.
