Randee,
Yes, the Meson Castilla has been recommended (by me and by others) on this Forum. If you do a text search on Meson Castilla and "match exact phrase"
you'll find a couple of posts. The hotel is also recommended by the NY Times travel editors and Karen Brown in her "Spain, Charming Inns and Itineraries", a great resource, by the way, (www.karenbrown.com-but I'm not sure that she has included it on her web site). Also the Gran Via and San Agustin are popular, well-appointed and well-located and cost under $100 per night.

Randee,
A post script. While I am very fond of the Meson Castilla, one of the writers of the new, "hot off the press" Fodor's 2000 Spain guide, George Semler, an American long-time resident of Spain, personally recommends the San Agustin to his budget-minded friends visiting Barcelona, and it appears (with a star, for "Fodor's favorite") in the new 2000 edition.

My friends stayed at the San Augustin last April and were very pleased ( good location, clean, pleasant staff). I stayed at the Gran Via two years ago and was quite happy there. My room was simple , but quiet and clean and the lobby and public rooms had a faded beauty feeling to them which I like. It is also a great location. You can walk to the Barrio and the Ramblas easily and the airport bus is around the corner.

Hi,

The Continental, on La Rambla, is terrific value. For around $85, you can get a lovely double-bedroom with a balcony overlooking La Rambla. They serve breakfast, but no other meals. The service is excellent. Find them at www.hotelcontinental.com
Cheers,
Bobby
