It would be helpful if you explained why Barcelona "sucked" for you or why you found Portugal to be better.

Personally, I enjoyed Barcelona. I'm not aching to go back - I'll go back for a long weekend of shopping sometime in the future. I am yearning to go to Lisbon, the Algarve coast and the Maderia Islands because of articles & photos. As for wasting money in Barcelona - when I went it was 201 pesetas to a dollar - a 3 course meal and a bottle of very good cava came out to about $35-$45 - not bad really.

Need to dissent. Barcelona is like a small, easy to handle Paris. Great cafes, old Gothic section, wide boulevards, great cafes, parks, lots of museums, great cafes, wonderful and unique buidings, easy to walk to different locations, (did I mention cafes?), interesting day trips. I've lost track of the number of cities that I have been to. Go to Barcelona. One of those on the top of the list.

Everything sucked about Barcelona. They sold out to Kentucy Fried Chicken and Burger King a long time ago. And you know something, I think they know that and are bitter about it. If you think Barcelona is a great european city, you have not been anywhere.

Name a city in Europe and you can bet I've been there. I did not see Kentucky Fried Chicken or Burger King, unlike many of the cities of Europe, so I guess I didn't stay in the "right" places. It is a spectacular city to which I've returned three times. Obviously Bruce didn't know where to go, didn't research it, or is just plain an idiot. I believe we all have different opinions, but to label an entire city that way simply shows that Bruce is not a true traveler. If he is he will tell us more specifically what was wrong.

While I'm sure Bruce is just trying to provoke, provocation can be interesting.

Dave, my girlfriend & both agree with your characterization of Barcelona as a "small, easy to handle Paris." We definitely got Parisian vibes with the grand boulevards like Passeig de Gracia, the plane trees, and all the great cafes. We spent hours and hours wandering through the fascinating Barri Gotic and just watching the flow of people on La Rambla (which I found to be a street more interesting than any street in Paris.)

Every day, on the way from our hotel to the Barri Gotic, we walked by a Burger King and (I think) a Dunkin' Donuts without them detracting one bit from our enjoyment of this fascinating city.

I feel sorry for the poor sucker who goes to Barcelona thinking this is a great european city. Buddy are you in for a surprise. Take my advice and get the hell out of there, as quick as possible, and be thankful you did not get robbed. These pro Barcelona people are either spammers or spaniards. Take my advice and go to a better part of europe.

Bruce, I would really appreciate your comments regarding your visits to the Gaudi church and the huge Gaudi Park as well as the cathedral. How did you find the atmosphere and little cafes in the beachfront "ghetto" area? What were your impressions of the huge indoor markets? Did you enjoy walking up through the parks to the old Olympic site? Did you not like the food in the rustic little restaurants frequented by locals? Please post your answers for I am sure they will be quite entertaining. By the way, I have no Spanish blood in me and I have never spammed anyone, your generalizations regarding people are as humorous as your generalizations about a city. Please, please entertain us some more.

Barcelona

It's true Barcelona is an small city.
It's true there are more splendour cities in Europe.
But Barcelona it's charming, it's different, the food is excellent, life is afordable. It's a very friendly city, people are talkative and warm. Women are beautiful, wines are superb. The city is very easy to walk by, Taxis are the cheapest in Europe.

Try the Majestic, it's perfectly located in Paseo de Las Gracias, Grand Café excellent food. Most famous tourist traps "Puerto Olimpico" "Ciudad Olimpica" íf you get the chance pay a visit but food and night life are just touristic.

Barcelona is the capitol city of Catalunya, which used to be a different country, they speak Catalan, and consider themselves first Catalanes, then Spanniards.

I recommend you to spend 2 or 3 days there. From there you may visit Andorra, small but good for skiing in winter and shopping in summer (great prices).

If you like to go shopping try in Barcelona Massimo Dutty, cheap and fancy men and women clothing, and Mango exclusively for women. L'illa is the only closed shopping mall, which is in "La Diagonal".

If you like wine, good food, great sights and warm people you may like it. If you just want to be in "craddle-like" tourist mass or love tourist traps you may dislike it.

Max

Almost forget!!

I would almost sin if I don't mention Gaudi's work. For me, he wasn't from this world, maybe from the future, visit what ever you see regarding Gaudi's work, "La Pedrera" "Parque Guell" there are more constructions but not all of them are open to visitors. He was a guy with such a vision that his ideas could perfectly fit the conteporanean architecture for years to come.

Picasso museum it's a must too.

Good luck,

Max

I was thinking of letting it pass, but just can't.

Bruce, this bud's for you:

Every big city in Europe has american fast food chain restaurant which are more frequented by youngsters and tourists (maybe like you). It's odd how a KFC or McDonalds call your attention instead of a nice small cafe, Gaudi's work, Las Ramblas, etc.

For your knowledge, Barcelona is not a country, it's a city. The country is Spain and the region is Cataluña.

I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt and pretend you are just teasing, because I wouldn't like to get the impression that you are a Dr.Pepper drinker-doritos muncher-coach potato.
