kinberlina, your brother may work at BankofAmerica, but he needs to do a little research. There are tons of partner banks in Italy. There is no specific Italian bank that partners but every major city and most minor "cities" in Italy have branches with ATMs of Deutsche Bank and I'm pretty sure there are some BNParibus banks at least in northern Italy as well. We have used ATMs at Deutsche banks in Ischia, Sicily, Naples, Rome, Venice, Siena, and Milan for starters.

kimberlina, It is confusing when you talk of using an ATM card as a credit card and then include the 1% that may or may not be involved.
An ATM cash withdrawl incurrs only the fee from your home bank (if any) and gives a decent rate of exchange.
