Bamberg to Berchtesgaden

My current 3 day plan, after 4 nights Berlin and before settling in for 4 nights in Unterschleisheim (Munich) is:

Train Berlin to Bamberg, spend day and night there.
Next day rent car drive to Alps, tour around (Konigsee, Ramsau) , spend 1 night in Berchtesgaden.
Following day tour around Alps some more (Almbachklamm, Wendelstein Peak and ? (or Grossglockner or Rossfeld Panoramic?) and wind up at night in Unterschleisheim. (I'm not planning to go to Eagles Nest.)

Should I try to squeeze in Rothenberg for part of a day, i.e. see Bamberg half a day , drive to Rothenberg for half a day, spend night there, or see Rothenberg on the way to Berchtesgaden, or skip Rothenberg and just do leisurely day in Bamberg.

Do you think it's better to get car in Bamberg then drive towards Berchtesgaden, or take a train to Munich and get a car there?

Do an intensive day of sightseeing and exploring in Bamberg. There is more than enough to see. Why rush from place to place and spend the best part of the day stuck in a rolling box.

By the way, please note that Rothenberg with an E is not the town you are thinking of, but a small village in the northern part of Franconia with about nothing to see or do. Since you'd probably use a GPS, you'd be in for an unpleasant surprise and wasted time...

This just seems like a lot of driving only to arrive at a destination for only one night, then get back in the car for another long drive the next day... just seems rushed to me and not taking into account what the actual drive time may be. Google lists it at 3 hours 45 minutes but in reality with traffic it will most likely take longer. That's a lot of time in the car day after day. If there's nothing in Berchtesgaden to hold your interest for a full day (at least 2 nights) maybe you need to choose a different destination.

I'll most likely spend a full day in Bamberg and skip Rothenburg ODT. I already have a night in Bamberg booked.

I'm not crazy about driving long distances but, but as a change of pace from the cities and charming towns, I'm trying to find a good route that will lead me through some beautiful scenery and hopefully some spectacular vistas.

For all of the rest of our 16 night trip, we'll be mostly stationary, for several days at a time.
