John, Alice answered your Bologna question a lot better than I could. But, I am wondering whether it wound be easier to go to Lucca and Pisa, since they are a lot closer to Florence than Bologna is. Especially if you have a car, that day trip would make more sense to me.

Howard:<BR><BR>Pisa mighto llok closer, but the travel is actually longer. Getting from Florence to Bologna by train takes some 50 minutes, while getting from Florence to Pisa takes at least 80 minutes. If you are driving, the A1 to Bologna is a much easier drive than the A11 to Pisa.

For those still plannign trips to N Italy- I'd recommend Bergamo (an easy train ride from Milano) and Mantova in addition to Bologna and Ferrara- both of which are wonderful. I also loved Cremona - no tourists and a wonderful central piazza with a huge tower on the cathedral

Enjoyed your Italy trip report, Howard. We are going in March and had planned to made a special trip to Orvieto - am wondering if the cathedral will still be covered in scaffolding? And also the mid-day hours that it was closed? Perhaps we will put that off for another trip - I realize the scaffolding has to be done, but we may day trip to another destination and enjoy Orvieto another time.<BR>

Brah, sorry but I can't help you with the scaffolding question. Maybe another poster can. While it was a great disappontment to see the scaffolding hiding almost the entire front of the church, we still enjoyed our time there and we we had more. It's on our list to definitely return to some day.<BR>I'm not sure of the siesta hours, but I believe it was noon-2 p.m. This is not the first time we encounted that situation. The same thing happened to us in the city of Como, which had a humorous sidelight. As we approach the Como Duomo (I love saying that!), a monk was pounding on the door in a feeble attempt to get in. Obviously, the church does not play favorites!
