Baby shopping in London-no I'm not :)

I wish I were but I am not the one with the baby, but I need to buy a new little Englishman a gift.
Harrods has a lousy online site, I cannot get into Little Badger & Sasti is not what we want..
So please, any mums out there with good shopping ideas, will you take pity on us?
Thank you

Why not buy something locally and mail it? I would think that would be more fun for the new Mom than stuff she can buy where she lives.

Hi Scarlett.

On reflection I would agree with catbert.

Something from the US would be very, very much appreciated.

Happy shopping

You could also try -

www.debenhams.com

www.johnlewis.com

- both of which department stores have baby/children's departments.

Also, have you heard of Boots the Chemists? They have a baby department instore and online (although it is taking me a good 10 minutes to download...) http://www.boots.com/shop/category_n...tionid=1015121

I have to say that when I had my first (nearly 17 years ago now, and she's taller than me!) a friend who was in New York at the time gave me/her a lovely little outfit, which was so pretty, yet different to what every other baby was wearing which had been bought in the UK. We had so many compliments "where DID you get that?" etc, that maybe sending something from the US would be more appreciated....because it's not what we can buy here...

I think John Lewis do mail order, and for some unknown reason, I am on their toys, childrens' clothes and childrens' shoes catalogue mailing lists but not their normal mailing lists! I got one recently and I have to admit they have some wonderful things...

But I must admit, I think it would be cooler to find something local to you (which none of the young englishman's friends could possibly be wearing) and post it.

Sorry, maybe it's just me... I'd rather put my name on that parcel then let a store do it for me.

Scarlett, you now live in such a great shopping place! And an air parcel won't take long. Add a small rattle for the baby

Thank you!
We used John Lewis to send wedding gifts..that was so easy and the selection was so nice, we thought we would do the same thing.
I am just learning my way around the shops here in Portland and the best baby store so far would be something from Nordstroms, which is fine but not what I want.
This baby will no doubt receive plenty of American gifts from us in the future, but this one I wanted to send from London..Burberry is a good idea. I looked at the Harvey Nichols site but didn't have enough time to really browse..
These are our friends who used to live in NY many years ago, and went back to England, children grew up and now They are having babies!!
How did that happen ~
For those who might remember this from a while back, this is the friend who came to stay with us in the States, and on the day she was due to fly back to London, she had an appendicitis attack..2 weeks later she declared me her Other Mother

If she lived in NYC, wouldn't a "Bloomies Baby" gift have the same chic in London as a "Harrods Baby" gift might have to someone here? (you can shop online)

Of course, you know this new mom best, so I'm just trying to help brainstorm.

Scarlett,

I live in the Belfast and most people that I know, who have a new born or a small child, like either US, French or Italian clothes for their newborns and infants.

I don't know if that helps you as I can buy those items locally.

As far as US is concerned Timberland is very popular here in Belfast but I don't know about London.

Is that any help?

most of the places mentioned are little more than a way to say "i spent a lot of money". notice that there is hardly any advice as to what to get but just what the name on the box should be.

we had the opposite situation (sending a gift to new parents in the US - from england). we put together a box of hand picked gifts...an england foot and rugby balls (to decorate the boy's room), england football kit for a baby, english teas and cakes, scottish soaps for the parents, a nice teddy bear, some music and various other things.

For future when you may be sending a US outfit: Janie and Jack, a very adorable baby/children's chain, is not in every city in US (alas, not in Portland), but can be purchased online. They mention on their site that they ship internationally and list the countries, inc. UK.
I have heard that they are owned by Gymboree (which, by the way, our French friends loved when they lived in US), but is higher end.

Apart from having, by far, the world's coolest brand-name these people have a lot of fun stuff for little people.

I would recommend against Burberry as a lot of their clothing has now gained a very bad reputation in the UK - just think trailer park trash!

Scarlett,
If you didn't get the message from David about Burberry, check out this little animation - it says it all!

Scarlett, Links of London do some beautiful silver gifts. www.linksoflondon.com. Don't know if baby is a boy or a girl, but they have some adorable bracelets.
Dragons in Walton Street do handpainted gifts for babies and children. They do lovely picture frames, with for example Guards (like the ones at Buckingham Palace), and they personalize this with the child's name. Don't know how much you want to spend, but the tiny children's chairs with names on are very cute too. Don't know their website.

I was in Harrods when my first grandson was 7 months old. I tried and tried to find him something "made in England" and finally gave up, as everything was French. I asked a sales person and she said the English prefer French-made items for quality so they carried NO UK-made baby clothes!
