The Howard Hotel is outstanding. We stayed there in 1992. Beautiful rooms and centrally located close to city center. We had been recommended the hotel by friends and were not disappointed. They will also negotiate on room rates if they are not full. Ours was very large and very nice.

Joppa Turrets Guest house - really nice place with extremely helpful owners, good breakfasts - located a 10-15 minute bus ride from the centre (buses are very frequent - never had to wait longer than 5 minutes. All rooms have views of the Firth of Forth - sea side promenade directly in front of the guest house. Because it is not right downtown rates are very reasonable particularly if you are staying 3 or more nights.

We stayed in a nice B & B called Ellesmere House which overlooked a public golf course and only half a block to a main bus line ( non stop to center of city). I think it was listed in Smooth Hounds Accommodations Directory (www.s-h-systems.co.uk). It was very reasonable, had good full Scottish breakfast, nicely served. Our room was on first floor, large by UK standards and the bathroom was one of the nicest we experienced ( even had washcloths). It was a long, but pleasant walk from downtown if one preferred instead of using the bus. We arrived by train , so used the taxis for getting to and from train station ( about a 10 minute taxi ride). Not elegant, but attractively furnished , clean and good service and helpful and pleasant proprietors( even furnished us ice at cocktail time). Lovely park nearby for walking and a really old pub across corner of the golf course and short block away. Ask for the room across from the dining room and on the front. Our room was the only bedroom I saw, but we were pleased and comfortable and it was quiet and very pleasant.
If I remember correctly, I think there were pictures on their ad on the Net via Smooth Hounds . We stayed for 4 nights which afforded 3 days of sighseeing.
I could dig out more specific info for you if you're interested. My e-mail

Hi Joan,

I definitely recommend the Elmview. The rooms are large and the breakfasts are wonderful. The beautiful dark green tiled bathrooms are large too. They provide a bottle of complimentary sherry and have refrigerators. You can't go wrong with this place! Their website is www.elmview.co.uk Have a great trip!
