I love your trip report Francebound! My husband and I are independent travelers and are planning a visit to the Azores at the end of May. We are thinking that we would like to spend 4 days or so in San Miguel and then probably to Terceira and Pico. We would like to rent a car in Sao Miguel. Is a car a good idea in the other two islands? We were thinking that we would take the ferry rather than fly to the other islands. We love the idea of whale watching, hiking, experiencing good food and relaxing. I will be looking at your trip report more carefully and reach out again.

Good to start your planning now for a trip to the Azores. Planning is half the fun anyway! We liked having a car in each island as we are used to doing that when we travel. It gives us the option of going where we want when we want. I looked into ferries but decided it was better for us to fly between the islands we wanted to visit and rent our car on arrival.
