Avignon in April??

I have been avidly reading all the postings about travel to Provence, since my wife and I are heading there this April. What a great resource of information! We were thinking about 3-4 days in Provence after 3-4 days in Paris, followed by trips to Brussels and Amsterdam. Sort of a full itinerary, I know, but we're sort of the "fit in as much as you" can type of travelers. As far as Provence is concerned, it is amazing to me how many almost opposite opinions can be expressed abut the same destinations. Avignon, Aix, St. Remy, etc. all seem to have their fans and "foes". I'm leaning towards Avignon because of the central location and because we are city-oriented people. My questions are whether Avignon in late April is likely to be packed with tourists, and which high-end (but not outrageous) hotels would you recommend. Hotel d'Europe has been mentioned several times. Worth the money?

Sorry I can't help with hotels, but I can say that Avignon won't be packed with tourists in April. It is busiest in July for the festival, but that early in the season should be fine.

I don't read much posters saying that they're foes of the places you listed. Some can prefer some above others, usually for good reasons (for instance someone wanting some night life will prefer Aix over Arles, someone prefering to have a more province town feeling will make the reverse choice).

Jon, Avignon Is a good choice. When I visited for the first time, I could walk across the bridge, take the bus or boat to Avignon. Only three minutes away, where trains and excursion buses took me, as a non driver where ever I wanted to go. And Avignon has by far better restaurants than Aix. For me, that was important.
