We rented from Hertz. Had an escort station wagon which was fine...but a little shaky over 100mph on the autobahn. We got the ford since we were dropping it in Rome and they won't let BMW, Benz, Audi, etc leave the country. I'd use a name firm since you can do it over the internet and get the confirmation printed to take along.

Many of "us" ("regulars" will tell you that www.autoeurope.com is the only name you need to know to arrange your car rental in Europe.
Still, I usually comparison shop, at least these few:
www.its-cars-hotels.com
www.kemwel.com
and
www.travelocity.com
Best wishes,
Rex

We rented from Sixt at Munich Airport. We got a BMW 323 station wagon for 8-9 days. Don't remember the exact cost, but remember that it was very reasonable. It was a diesel (fuel cheaper than regular gas) and it was full of pep. It also had a GPS system, but we didn't fool with it.
Not sure what dropoff charges would be, but I would check with them. We were happy. I think their website is stix.com

Last year we rented in Munich and dropped off in Frankfurt. The best price we found (and we contacted all the companies mentioned in previous posts and then some) was through Nova Rentacar
http://rentacar-europe.com/
You should contact several, because no one company has the best prices everywhere for every time period.

i just came across this posting from last year...i should add that we ended up renting through www.gemut.com which is an oregon based company that specializes in germany...they are an agent...i could not touch their rental prices anyplace...i have rented again from them for this december in both germany and in england...great prices, exceptional service
