Austrian Alps the slow way

Villach would make a nice base for a few days; Bled and Ljubljana are both within a day trip's reach, too. You can also easily reach Tre confini/Dreiländereck/Tromeja, the trip-point of Italy, Austria and Slovenia for hiking. Villach and Klagenfurt are both worth a look. Minimundus is whimsical. There is plenty of hiking around Millstättersee, too.

Ros, not wanting to muddy the waters for you, but our recent holiday included some of the places mentioned above, (if you want to wade through my report as I got some great advice on Fodors .)
Slowly does it...our trip to north Italy

My apologies for not responding to the last three posts, all of which are much appreciated. We've had illness in the family, but I'm grateful as always for everyone's help. neckervd, we've decided to enter Italy from Mayrhofen (so via the Brenner Pass) before driving to Cortina d'Ampezzo for 5 days of walking. We'll then head off to Slovenia (Rabanov Kot) via San Candido.

The itinerary via the international Brenner truck motorway (from Wiesling up to Franzensfeste-Pustertal) is the shortest one (in miles and in time), but may be not the most scenic one.
The alternative would go via Gerlosplatte - Krimml waterfalls - Mittersill - Felbertauern - Huben - Stallersattel - Welsberg - Toblach.
" We'll then head off to Slovenia (Rabanov Kot) via San Candido"
So you will backtrack up to Toblach then drive all along the Drau river up to Voelkermarkt, from where you will reach Sulzbach Markt/Robanov Kot along the Austro-Slovenian border.
The "scenic places in Carinthia" along this itinerary would obviously be the lakes (Millstaettersee, Ossiachersee, Woerthersee and Klopeinersee) as well as the already mentioned cities of Villach and Klagenfurt. and the castles of Sommeregg, Porcia, Maria Loretto and Landskron.
I don't know whether you plan to enter really into Slovenia after your stay at Sulzbach/RobanovKot or if you will drive directly towards Vienna. Whatever you do, you could visit the cities of Maribor, Graz and Eisenstadt (Eszterhazy castle).
