Austria - Itinerary help . 10 day trip - Aug 2012

Just done a bit of research and would like to have your input to finalise the tour itinerary for 10 nights. We are two families planning to visit in mid Aug 2012

We would like to visit more of scenic places…mountains, lakes, valleys , a boat ride , cable car trip to a mountain top.

My initial list made from information gathered through various tourism sites etc.

1.Salzburg - stay at Ramsau ( 3 nights?)
Make day trips to

Berchtesgaden
Konigsee
St Wolfgang

Any other places ??

2. Innsbruck ( 3 nights?)
3. Zellam see Kaprun ( 3 nights?)

pls advise if we can make day trips to any of the places mentioned below from Innsbruck or Zellam see Kaprun.

Krimml waterfalls
Hohe Tauern National park
Lake Achnesse
Stubaital
Seefield
Swarovski crystal in Wattens
Gasteinertal valley
Carinthia

Any other places which should be on this list ? Or any places that need to be taken out from the above list ?

Any suggestions are welcome !!

Thanks in advance !!

Quite a confusing post.

1. You mention "Salzburg" but you'll stay in Ramsau, which is a tiny village near Berchtesgaden/Bad Reichenhall. Your day trips don't list Salzburg, either.

The other places are doable from either Innsbruck or Zell am See - but not all of them since you'll have only 6 nights which makes 5 full days less one day moving inbetween.

Hohe Tauern National Park is HUGE - what are you interested to see?

Skip Seefeld, nothing special.

Carinthia is a state with about 100+ places to see. Again, what are you interested in?

Stubai Tal and Swarovski Crystal World can easily be done from Innsbruck (by public transport, Swarovski runs a shuttle).
For each you need about half a day.
Achensee and Krimml Waterfalls are easier to reach if you have your own car. Saves you a lot of time. With public transportation each is a day trip from Innsbruck.

I agree with Ingo. Seefeld itself is not very interesting. The area around it though is nice. Lots of possibilities for hiking.

And yes, Hohe Tauern is huge and to appreciate it a few days are needed.

You´ve got a lot on your itinerary, but consider that time is needed especially if you would like to see the more scenic sites (mountains, lakes ...). You have to get out of the car and away from the parking areas to see the beautiful spots.

Hi,

With 3 nights each, you're looking at 2.5 days of sightseeing in each area. Good thing is that each destination (base for 3 nights) is within a 2 hour drive of each other.

We're familiar with the places you're looking to use as a base. By the way, we love staying in Ramsau for our visits to the Salzburg/Berchtesgaden area. Stayed in '06, '07 and '09.

Berchtesgaden, Konigsee and even the Jennerbahn cable car (next to Konigsee) are easy in a day. All are within 15 minutes of one another also.
Salzburg is worth a day or at least the better part of a day and evening. Less than 30 minutes drive from Ramsau.
St. Wolfgang is a little over an hour from Ramsau. St. Gilgen is also nice to visit.

From Zell am See, Krimml and some of the Hohe Tauern can be seen. Drive the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse while based in Zell am See. Take a boat trip, or rent your own electric boat, and tour the lake.

To get from Zell am See to Innsbruck, maybe drive the Gerlos Pass and then through some of the Zillertal on the way to Innsbruck.

From Innsbruck, Swarovski, Stubaital, Achensee, etc. are fairly close. I'd add visits to Ambras Castle and the Nordkettenbahn as things to do while in the Innsbruck area.

Just some opinions... Swarovski was a big let down for us. So-so exhibits and a huge store. Seefeld, I wouldn't bother. Nice, but just more of the same you'll be seeing. We love staying in Hall in Tirol at the Gasthof Badl for our visits to the Innsbruck area. Stayed here in '01, '03, '05 and '10.

If you're flying home from Munich airport, drive to Munich via Seefled, Mittenwald, Garmisch, etc. Stop for an hour or two along the way, especially in Mittenwald.

Thanks for the responses.
Paul thanks for your detailed input. really helpful.

after reading Lolaz response .. i think i may skip Swarovski world. Is Ramsau or Salzburg a better base?

If you haven't already, consider staying in apartements (fewos) - a great savings for families.

If you're looking in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden check out:

www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/index.html

We love this place and the people who own/run it. We've stayed here for a total of 9 nights on 3 separate trips.
