austria in october
Is it worth going to Austria in mid-late October? Are the Alps out of reach by then? I want to go to Munich, Vienna, Bad Gastein and Hall in Tirol, but I'm wondering if the weather will be too bad at that time of year ... any thoughts?

Sorry for the vagueness ... I was supposed to go to Austria next week, but I'm sick. So I want to reschedule for the third week of October, but I'm afraid the alpine parts of the country will be too cold/wet/whatever to visit.
Thanks

I went during the last half of Oct. 1998 and it was great. The fall foliage was still there and on most days the weather was sunny and cool, but never too cold for anything. We had a few rainy days, but that can happen any time of year. It's a lot less crowded and less expensive too. I'm sorry you are sick, but I think you will be glad to have postponed your trip until the beautiful autumn season.

We were in Austria the first week of November last year. It required a coat - but it was beautiful. We had a great time. It wasn't very crowded. We did everything we wanted to do. I'd go again in early November so I think mid October would be super!
Have fun!

I was in both Switzerland and Austria last October and it was wonderful. Temps actually warm for part of it and got cold other part....so hit or miss. For getting around by car, only very high mountain passes will be affected that time of year. We found that only an issue in Switzerland, Susten pass was closed...we had to drive around. Austria all clear.
